Income tax receipt tops Tk 2,000cr in 6 days as fair ends today

Income tax collection in six days of the ongoing weeklong nationwide Income Tax Fair crossed Tk 2,000 crore on Tuesday as a record number of taxpayers filed their tax returns and paid tax at the fair venues.

According to the National Board of Revenue data, around 5.40 lakh taxpayers filed their income tax returns and paid more than Tk 2,016 crore in income tax until Tuesday at the fair venues across the country.

The fair that began on November 14 is set to end today (Wednesday).

The revenue board received Tk 1,900 crore in income tax in the first six days of the last year’s edition of the fair from 4.12 lakh taxpayers.

On the sixth day alone in this year, the NBR recorded income tax collection worth Tk 358 crore as more than 1.19 lakh taxpayers filed their tax returns at the fair venues, including the central venue set up at the Dhaka Officers’ Club in the capital.

Around 2.53 lakh people visited the fair venues on Tuesday and received tax related services from tax officials, according to the NBR data.

In the six days, around 15.13 lakh people visited the fair venues and received services against 13.76 lakh visitors in the first six days of the last year’s edition, it showed.

A total of 26,831 new taxpayers obtained electronic taxpayers identification numbers until Tuesday, it showed.

Like the previous years, the revenue board may face a surge in the number of visitors today, the last day of the fair.

The NBR will not extend the fair as taxpayers will be able to file their tax returns and pay taxes visiting the field-level tax offices until November 30, the last day of income tax returns submission.

NBR chairman Md Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan on Tuesday said that fair venues would remain open as long as taxpayers would be present at the venues in the last day of the fair.

Tax officials will receive tax returns from them even after 5:00pm, the closing time of the fair, he said.

Banks and financial institutions under the large taxpayers’ unit (LTU) of the revenue board will hand over cheques to the NBR chairman today as part of their tax payment.

This year, the NBR has arranged seven-day fair at eight divisional cities, four-day at 56 district headquarters and two-day at 56 upazilas across the country.
