Ministries, FBCCI meeting to control essentials’ price hike

Three ministries of the government and the apex body of business organization Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) organized a roundtable meeting at FBCCI auditorium in the capital on Sunday with a view to finding out a strategic way to control the price hike of essential commodities in the market.

Some important options from the FBCCI leaders have been recommended to the government bodies to bring rising prices of essential items under control. Sheikh Fazle Fahim, the FBCCI president, urged the government to conduct a Survey on the demand of required essential items annually for Bangladesh.

He assured all cooperation from FBCCI to the ministers who took part in the dialogue and expressed hope to work together so that fair competition in business as well as the rights of consumers is established in the days to come.

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, Food Minister Shadhan Chandra Majumder, NBR Chairman Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan and concerned ministry’s secretaries and leaders of different trade bodies attended the meeting with FBCCI president Fazle Fahim in the chair.

“Price hike of onion was illogical after the bar on import from India. Traders have hoarded onion despite knowing the news that consignments of onion were being imported from abroad. So, the way the traders increased the onion price within 24 hours across the country was totally unfair,” Tipu Munshi told reporters after the meeting.

Tipu Munshi said after banning onion export by India, the government asked the major importers to import onion and they started import of onion from Pakistan, Turkey and Egypt to control the market.

Mosharrof Hossain Bhuiyan asked the traders not to increase the prices of essentials including edible oil and salt in future. We have information regarding all traders and importers to find out cause of anomalies, the NBR chairman said.
