National Income Tax Day on Monday

The ‘National Income Tax Day-2019’ will be observed on Monday across the country aiming to create awareness among the people for payment of income tax regularly.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has chalked out different programmes to observe the day with the slogan “We all will pay tax, the country will be self-reliant (Sobai Mile Dibo Kor, Desh Hobe Swanirvor)”.

The theme of this year’s tax day is ‘Ensuring a taxpayer-friendly environment by providing transparent and modern tax services’, reports BSS.

President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday issued separate messages on the occasion, wishing success of the day.

In their messages, the President and the Prime Minister greeted all officials and employees of the NBR and tax-paying individuals and companies marking the income tax day.

President M Abdul Hamid in his message said, “The income tax has great importance as one of the major sources of internal resource collection. Income tax is considered as the key source of revenue earning in all developed countries across the world”.

Bangladesh is moving forward to turn into a developed country through implementing the Vision-2021 and Vision-2041, he said, adding there is no alternative to the collection of domestic resources for implementing the Vision-2041.

“So, it is essential to increase the number of taxpayers and revenue collection from the income tax sector,” the President said and hoped that the NBR will take more effective steps in this regard.

He said the officials of the tax division have been delivering tax services relentlessly to enrich the state treasury amid the coronavirus pandemic which is appreciable.

Noting that the celebration of income tax day is an important step to create awareness about income tax and encourage the people to pay tax, he said, “I think this will lead to the development of a tax-friendly culture in the country”.

Hamid urged the taxpayers to pay their income tax on time to continue the development progress of the country.

In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said greatest Bangali of all times Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman established the NBR in 1972, which has been working relentlessly for the successful implementation of the government’s development programmes by ensuring a business and investment-friendly environment as well as enriching the state’s revenue.

NBR is working to develop a revenue-friendly culture in the country, various innovative activities of the organisation have already been expanded from the national level to the rural areas, she added.

Although the Income Tax Fair would not be held this year due to the global pandemic COVID-19, the unprecedented response of taxpayers in the tax zones has created a new history in tax collection, the premier said.

As per the ‘National Tax Card Policy, 2010 (amendment)’, 141 taxpayers are being given tax cards and 525 highest and long term taxpayers across the country are being honoured with the award this year to encourage the people to pay income tax, Sheikh Hasina added.

The NBR is playing an effective role in implementing the ‘Vision-2021’ and ‘Vision-2041’ by collecting the revenues, the prime minister.

She urged all to discharge their responsibilities with dedication and sincerity in the ‘Mujib Barsho’ to build the ‘Sonar Bangla’ as dreamt by father of the nation.

Marking the day, a virtual seminar titled “Increasing the scope of income tax collection through improved services” will be held at the NBR conference room at 11:00 am on Monday.

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal will address the seminar as the chief guest with NBR Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem in the chair.
