Inflation rises to 5.32pc in February

The point-to-point inflation increased by 0.30 percentage points to 5.32 per cent in February from that of 5.02 per cent in January on price hike of both food and non-food items, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics.

In January, the overall point-to-point inflation had stood at its lowest after January 2014.

in February, both food and non-food inflation increased to 5.42 per cent and 5.17 per cent respectively from 5.23 per cent and 4.69 per cent respectively a month ago, showed the BBS data released on Wednesday.

Statistics and Informatics Division secretary Mohammad Yamin Chowdhury released the data at a press briefing held at the BBS conference room in the capital Dhaka.

According to the BBS data, the general inflation in rural areas increased to 5.33 per cent in February from 5.00 per cent in January.

The general inflation rate in urban areas also increased to 5.30 per cent in February from 5.05 per cent in January.

Prices of rice, broiler chicken, edible oil and sugar increased in February compared with those in January while prices of potatoes, onion, vegetables, fruits and spices declined in the month from that of January, the data showed.

The moving average general inflation stood at 5.63 per cent in March 2020-February 2021, which was 5.60 per cent in March 2019-February 2020.
