The Bangladesh Association of Construction Industry (BACI) has expressed concern that the recent rise in prices of construction materials could halt all government construction projects, may hamper annual development programs, and could adversely affect the country’s socio-economic development and left a large group of workers jobless.
The speakers made these demands at a press conference held on Tuesday afternoon. The negotiators said that the prices of almost all types of commodities in the sector, including MS Rod and other iron products, Stone Chips, Cement, Brick, Sanitary Electrical, etc., which are the main components of the construction industry, are increasing abnormally.
Depending on the class, the growth rate is about 25-40%. In addition, the wages of the workers involved in this industry have also increased by about 70-80%. On the other hand, the cost of transporting construction materials will also increase in proportion to the rise in fuel prices. In this situation, if it is not possible to stop the trend of abnormal price increase, all the construction work of the project will come to a standstill and implementation of the project will become impossible.
The negotiators drew the attention of the Prime Minister and the concerned quarters of the government and demanded that since the current work is being done on a fixed rate contract, the price adjustment should be introduced by issuing a notification according to the formula inserted in the PPR in special arrangements. The rate schedule of all government tenders should be updated as per the current market rates. The cost of water and electricity used in the project should be included in the PWD Rate Schedule.
