BGMEA emphasises rapid completion of railway projects for Bangladesh’s economic benefit

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) on Tuesday reiterated the need for speedy completion of the ongoing railway development projects across the country to derive economic benefit.

“The growing economy of Bangladesh has reinforced the need for upgrading railway connectivity, including building new tracks and converting single lines to double tracks and the existing rail lines into dual gauge,” said BGMEA President Faruque Hassan.

Mr Hassan made the demand in a meeting with railways secretary Dr Md Humayun Kabir at Rail Bhaban in the city.

BGMEA Vice President Miran Ali and director Asif Ashraf were also present at the meeting.

Earlier on January 11, the BGMEA leaders met with Railways Minister Md Nurul Islam Sujan and requested him to launch a special DEMU train from Dhaka to Sreepur for RMG employees and workers.

They also called for the implementation of the inland container depot (ICD) project in Gazipur’s Dhirashram area to cater to the rapid growth of containerised traffic.

They said the construction of an ICD on the western bank of the Jamuna river in the Sirajganj district would facilitate the transportation of RMG raw materials and essential commodities from India.
