TCB to buy sugar, edible oil, lentil from local importers

The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh is going to procure edible oil, sugar and lentil from local importers to distribute them at a subsidised rate among the low-income group.

The cabinet committee on government purchase approved three proposals from the TCBin a meeting on Wednesday.

Finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal presided over the meeting virtually.

The monthly inflation sustains over 6 per cent since February, and the TCB has been apportioning essential itemsamong the poor segment of population against the backdrop of price spiral in the local market.

Former World Bank Dhaka Office chief economist Zahid Hussain said that TCB should import the items instead of buying those from local market.

It will not improve the supply situation, he said.

Additional secretary ZillurRahmanChowdhury said that the TCB would buy 15,000 tonnes of sugar from local refineries at Tk 123.5 crore with per kilogramme costing Tk 84.

The City Group and the Meghna Group will supply the sweetener.

The trading corporation will also buy 13,500 tonnes of lentil with per kilogramme costing Tk 117.

ACI Pure Flour Ltd, SenaKalyanSangstha, NS Construction, Bangladesh Edible Oil Ltd, Nabil Naba Foods Ltd andEase Services Ltd will supply the item.

The TCB purchase also includes 1.92 crorelitre of soybean oil, with each litre costing Tk 201; local refineries under the City Group and the MeghnaGroup are among the suppliers, said ZillurRahman.

The official said that the committee also approved 10 more proposals involving Tk 2,194 crore.

Among the purchase proposals, Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation will buy 30,000 tonnesof bulk granular urea from The United Arab Emirates atTk 179.21 crore.

The Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation will purchase 30,000 tonnesof DAP fertilizer at Tk 242.53 crore from Canadian Commercial Corporation.

The BADC will also buy 40,000 tonnes of DAP fertilizer at Tk 420 crore from Morocco and also 30,000 tonnesof TSP fertilizer at Tk 252 crore from the same country.

The committee also approved a proposal from the home ministry to buy one ‘GSM UMTS Vehicular Active Support System’for Rapid Action Battalion. Computer Services Ltd will supply the system at Tk 49.22 crore.

Another proposal from the home ministry to purchase 30 (2700cc) jeeps for RAB was also approved.

The state-owned Pragoti Industries Ltdwill supply the vehicles worth Tk 28.20 crore.
