Most RMG businesses clear wages, Eid bonuses

Most of the readymade garment (RMG) manufacturers have paid the wages and Eid bonuses on or before April 19, said the Industrial Police and the industry insiders.

Moreover, there have been no complaints regarding the payments of wages, allowances and bonuses to the workers of the RMG sector ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr 2023, said both manufacturers and workers’ leaders.

According to the data shared by the industrial police, till April 19, 1,490 factories of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) have paid their wages for March 2023, which is 91.35% of the total 1,631 BGMEA factories.

However, BGMEA said that 2,126 factories of 2,151 factory units (98.84%) have cleared their wages for March 2023 as of April 19.

Industrial Police data also said that among 1,631 factories of the BGMEA, 878 or 53.83% of factories have cleared their Eid-ul-Fitr bonuses.

On the other hand, BGMEA said that 1,936 or 90% of factories have cleared their Eid bonuses.

621 of the total 700 Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) factories or 88.71% factories have cleared their wages of March, said industrial police data, whereas 467 or 66.71% have paid the Eid bonuses.

Moreover, among 358 BTMA factories, 335 or 93.58% of factories have cleared their wages for the month of March 2023, said the industrial police data, whereas 192 factories or 53.63% have cleared Eid bonuses.

Regarding factories under BEPZA, 344 factories out of 345 or 99.71% have paid the wages to the workers for the month of March 2023, industrial police data stated.

As of April 19, 327 factories or 94.78% have paid Eid bonuses to their workers.

Regarding partial salary for April, BGMEA data said that 1,768 factories or 82.19% are expected to clear their partial salary for April 2023.

Talking to Dhaka Tribune, Shahidullah Azim, vice-president of BGMEA said that they are hopeful that by April 20, 100% of all BMGEA members will be able to pay the wages, allowances and bonuses to the workers.

Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, Babul Akhtar, chairman of the Bangladesh Garment and Industrial Workers Federation (BGIWF) said that most of the factories have already cleared wages and bonuses of their workers.

There was no complaint of any hassles during this time around, he said.

However, every time, there are problems in non-members and sub-contract small factories as they cannot pay wages and bonuses at the stipulated date, which leads to labour unrest. But the scenario is different this year, he added.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance has released cash incentives of Tk1,000 crore for Bangladesh’s export-oriented knitwear sector for financial support for payment of salary and Eid bonus ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Earlier on March 30, BKMEA requested cash assistance by issuing a letter signed by its President AKM Salim Osman.
