Taka-rupee debit card to be launched: BB

The Bangladesh Bank has decided to launch a taka-rupee debit card in the country in September to allow travellers to make payments through the card at home as well as in India.

The card will allow individuals to make local payments as well as settle payments in the Indian rupee when traveling to India.

Bangladesh Bank governor Abdur Rouf Talukder disclosed the information while announcing the monetary policy statement for the July- December period of the financial year 2023-24 on June 18.

He said that the central bank was looking to introduce a taka-rupee pay-card.

Abdur Rouf said that the taka-rupee debit card would offer users the convenience of making various payments within Bangladesh using the taka.

Additionally, when traveling to India, cardholders will have the added advantage of being able to make purchases and transactions in the Indian rupee, he said.

Bangladesh is among the countries with the highest number of tourists visiting India.

As per BB rules, visitors can spend a maximum of 12,000 dollars in case of travelling to India.

Banks and financial institutions will issue the card.

Currently, a traveller has to exchange money twice while visiting India, Abdur Rouf said, adding that once the card was introduced, money exchange hassles would be minimised.
