Jute workers at state-run mills in Khulna staying away from work Monday
Apparel workers staged demonstrations yesterday in Gazipur and Savar to demand their due wages.
Workers at five state-run jute mills yesterday decided to protest with a human chain program and to stay away from work to realize their demands which include being paid their due wages and Eid bonuses on time.
Workers of an apparel factory yesterday protested at Hotapara in Gazipur for their due wages as well.
They said their employer, Elegant Garments, promised to pay their wages for March and April on multiple dates but reneged every time.
At one point they hurled brickbats at the factory and proceeded to block the nearby Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.
Police was deployed in the area and had to use batons on the protesters to disperse them.
Jahangir Hossain, inspector of Gazipur Industrial Police, said the workers refused to remove the highway blockade despite receiving assurances of their due wages being cleared soon and so the police had to use force.
The management of Elegant Garments could not be reached for comment despite repeated attempts.
Jute workers to abstain from work in Khulna
Jute workers of five state-run mills yesterday announced a work abstention and human chain program from today to demand payment of all their due wages, Eid bonuses, and other issues.
A press briefing was organized jointly by Jute Mills Workers’ Union of Khalishpur and Daulatpur mills on the day, representing jute mill workers of five factories in Khulna, Chittagong, and Sirajganj.
In his speech, Abu Daud Din Muhammad, president of Khalishpur Jute Mill’s Sramik-Karmachari Union, said they would hold a two-day work abstention and human chain program on Monday and Tuesday to demand their due wages, Eid bonuses, implementing the government-declared general holiday for jute workers, and implementation of their wage commission.
Workers continue protest in Narayanganj
Workers of an apparel factory continued their protest yesterday for the third consecutive day in front of the Shaheed Minar in Chashara demanding their pending salaries before Eid-ul-Fitr.
Workers of HR Fashion, located in Fatullah upazila’s Hajiganj, gathered to demand payment of their due salaries.
They alleged that the factory management had promised to pay their wages for March and April on multiple occasions, but reneged on their promises every time.
Md Sohel, owner of HR Fashion, said he urged the workers to rejoin the factory and refrain from protesting but they are not listening to him.
