The price of aubergine shot up to Tk 90 a kilogram on the kitchen markets in the capital on Tuesday, a day before the beginning of Ramadan, the fasting month of the Muslims.
Traders said that the prices of most of the other vegetables also went up on the wholesale market due to a supply shortage ahead of the eight-day restrictions on business activities and public movement the government is going to enforce from today to check the fresh wave of COVID-19 outbreak.
They said that suppliers of vegetables in different parts of the country decreased their supply in fear of losses as a good number of people left Dhaka before the restriction period begins.
The price of aubergine went up by Tk 20-30 a kg in the last three days as the demand for the item increased due to Ramadan.
The prices of other vegetables also increased by Tk 10-15 a kg in the last couple of days in the city’s kitchen markets.
Aubergine sold for Tk 70-90 a kg, papaya for Tk 40-45 a kg, bitter gourd for Tk 60 a kg, bottle gourd for Tk 50-60 apiece, beans for Tk 30-40 a kg, radish for Tk 30 a kg, cucumber for Tk 60-70 a kg and tomato for Tk 30-35 a kg on Tuesday.
Potato was selling for Tk 20 a kg while green chilli was selling for Tk 60 70 a kg on the day.
City’s kitchen markets on Tuesday also witnessed a huge crowd as people continued buying essential commodities in additional quantities for Ramadan as the fresh COVID-induced restrictions start today.
People having means bought rice, atta, pulse, soya bean oil, gram and sugar in large quantities at high prices day before the restrictions and Ramadan begin.
The medium quality variety of rice was selling for Tk 55-60 a kg on the day.
The standard variety of Miniket rice sold for Tk 64-67 a kg and the fine variety sold for Tk 68-70 a kg. Najirshail rice sold for Tk 70-72 a kg in the city.
The coarse variety of red lentil sold for Tk 65-70 a kg while the medium quality variety sold for Tk 85-90 a kg on the markets.
The fine variety of red lentil sold for Tk 115-120 a kg.
A one-litre bottle of soya bean oil sold for Tk 135-140 while five litres of packaged soya bean oil sold for Tk 630-650 on Tuesday.
Unpackaged soya bean oil sold for Tk 120-125 a litre and palm oil sold for Tk 110-115 a litre on the day.
Refined sugar retailed at Tk 68-70 a kg while the locally produced variety retailed at Tk 70 a kg.
Gram was selling for Tk 70-75 a kg while dates for Tk 150-500 a kg in the city markets. The local variety of onion sold for Tk 40-45 a kg while the imported variety sold for Tk 35-38 a kg in the capital.
The imported variety of garlic retailed at Tk 110-130 a kg while the local variety sold for Tk 100-110 a kg in the capital. The imported variety of ginger sold for Tk 100-120 a kg and the local variety retailed at Tk 120-140 a kg.
