The selling of essential products by the state-run Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) will continue across the country despite the strict lockdown enforced by the government to rein in the surge in Covid-19 cases.
The TCB has been selling its essential items everyday with an affordable price across the country including in the capital.
The government will enforce a week-long strict lockdown from tomorrow to control the spread of the pandemic while the country is also under lockdown since April 5 with some restrictions.
Talking to BSS, Senior secretary of the Commerce Ministry Dr Md Jafar Uddin said that the TCB, as part of rendering its emergency services, would continue selling of essential products during the strict lockdown to be enforced from tomorrow by following the health guidelines.
The TCB has been selling its six essential commodities everyday with some 500 mobile trucks throughout the country to keep the prices of essentials stable. The Corporation has been selling its items through some 100 trucks in 100 points in the capital.
The state-run trading corporation has been selling per liter soybean oil at Taka 100, per KG sugar, chickpeas and lentil at Taka 55, per KG date at Taka 80 while per KG onion at Taka 20.
Each consumer can purchase maximum 5 liter edible oil, 4 kg of sugar, chickpeas and lentil each, and 1 to 2 kg dates at a time in a single day.
Talking about the preparations of the TCB during the Holy Month of Ramadan, Jafar said, “We’ve enhanced the capacity of TCB considering the extreme poverty rate of the country which is now around 12 percent. TCB has a stockpile of 10 to 12 percent of those essential items which remain high in demand during Ramadan.”
Earlier, the corporation started its selling of essential commodities at an affordable price from March 17 marking the birth centenary celebration of Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the month of Ramadan.
The operations of TCB were also strengthened through increasing the number of mobile essential items-laden selling trucks to 500 from 400.
Meanwhile, some 34 monitoring teams headed by the Ministry of Commerce have been keeping their strong vigil in the capital so that no businessman can make excessive profit through destabilizing the markets of essentials by pursuing unholy means during this lockdown period and also during the month of Ramadan.
Besides, the concerned government agencies are also strictly monitoring the markets regularly across the country.
