The prices of rice and soya bean oil increased on the kitchen markets in the capital Dhaka on Friday, a day after the announcement of the proposed national budget for the financial year 2021-22.
The prices of onions also witnessed a sharp rise on the kitchen markets in the capital over the week.
After the harvesting of boro paddy in April-May in the country, the prices of rice had decreased slightly for couple of weeks but the prices have started rising again since mid-June.
Traders said that the prices of rice increased due to the high price of paddy.
They also said that the price of soya bean oil continued rising on the market as refiners increased the prices of item showing the price hike of crude oil on the international market as an excuse.
Although the refiners and the government had set the price of a one-litre bottle of soya bean oil at Tk 153 but the item was selling up to Tk 160.
The rice prices increased by Tk 1-2 a kg in the city over the week ending Friday with the medium quality variety selling for Tk 52-58 a kg on Friday.
The standard variety of Miniket rice sold for Tk 58-62 a kg and the fine variety sold for Tk 64-66 a kg.
Najirshail rice sold for Tk 65-68 a kg in the city.
The price of soya ben oil increased by Tk 6-7 a litre over the week ending Friday while the price of the commodity increased by Tk 15-16 a litre in the last two weeks.
The edible oil refiners on May 27 announced increasing the price of soya bean oil by Tk 9 a litre to Tk 153 a litre from Tk 144 a litre.
Although the association with the consent from the government had set the maximum retail price of soya bean oil at Tk 153 a littre, the item was sold for up to Tk 160 a litre in the city markets on Friday.
Five litres of packaged soya bean oil sold for Tk 680-720 on the day.
Unpackaged soya bean oil sold for Tk 130 a litre and palm oil sold for Tk 115-118 a litre on the day.
The prices of onions increased by Tk 20 a kg over the week. The local variety sold for Tk 55-60 a kg and the imported variety for Tk 50-60 a kg in the capital on Friday.
The prices of garlic remained unchanged over the week in the city’s kitchen markets.
The imported variety of garlic retailed at Tk 130-140 a kg while the local variety sold for Tk 100 a kg in the capital.
The prices of vegetables also remained high over the course of the week.
Aubergine sold for Tk 40-60 a kg, papaya for Tk 50-55 a kg, bitter gourd for Tk 50-60 a kg, bottle gourd for Tk 40-50 apiece, cucumber, string beans and okra for Tk 50-60 a kg, pointed gourd for Tk 40-60 a kg and tomato for Tk 60-70 a kg.
Potato sold for Tk 20-25 a kg while green chilli sold for Tk 70-80 a kg on Friday.
The price of beef remained unchanged in the city over the week and the item sold for Tk 550-570 a kg on Friday.
Mutton sold for Tk 800-900 a kg in the capital on the day.
Broiler chicken was selling for Tk 130-140 a kg, the Sonali variety for Tk 220-230 a kg and the local variety for Tk 500-540 a kg on Friday.
The prices of fish remained unchanged in the city markets over the week.
Rohita sold for Tk 250-280 a kg and Katla for Tk 230-260 a kg, depending on size and quality.
Pangas sold for Tk 130-180 a kg and Tilapia for Tk 120-160 a kg.
The imported variety of ginger sold for Tk 120-140 a kg and the local variety retailed at Tk 130-160 a kg.
The prices of red lentil remained unchanged over the week.
The coarse variety sold for Tk 70-75 a kg and the medium quality variety for Tk 85-90 a kg on the market on Friday.
The fine variety of red lentil sold for Tk 115-120 a kg on the day.
The price of eggs also remained unchanged over the week. The item was selling for Tk 28-30 a hali or four pieces on Friday.
The prices of sugar remained high over the week as well. Refined sugar retailed at Tk 68-70 a kg while the locally produced variety retailed at Tk 70 a kg.
Fine-quality packaged salt retailed at Tk 35 a kg and the refined variety at Tk 25 a kg on the day.
