Three out of the country’s four mobile phone operators have failed to provide their customers with the minimum 4G internet speed in the Rangpur division, according to a Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission survey.
The BTRC survey conducted between October 7 and October 20 in 2021 detected the deviation of the three mobile phone operators.
The telecom operators were supposed to provide minimum 7Mbps internet download speed under the 4G licensing guidelines.
The telecom operators are Grameenphone, Banglalink and Teletalk, showed the BTRC report published on Tuesday.
Robi, the country’s second largest telecom operator, was the lone operator in the region that managed to provide more than 7Mbps 4G internet speed.
The 4G internet download speed of Robi was 8.36Mbps.
Teletalk, the state-owned telecom operator, provided the worst service in terms of quality in the division during the quality assessment drive of the commission.
The operator’s 4G internet speed was 2.48Mbps.
The 4G download speed of two other telecom operators, Grameenphone and Banglalink, was 5.06Mbps and 6.82Mbps respectively.
In terms of 3G internet download speed, GP provided 1.17Mbps and Teletalk provided 1.18Mbps against the minimum regulatory requirement of providing 2Mbps.
The telecom regulator assesses the telecom operators’ division- and area-wise service quality and is warning the operators to improve service quality where it is required.
When the internet users in the country is increasing rapidly, dissatisfaction of the customers over service quality including internet speed has made the situation unwelcoming.
The telecom operators have blamed a number of issues, including high spectrum price and taxation, as major impediments to making investments to improve service quality.
With the rapid expansion, the number of active internet connections in the country reached 12.66 crore and the number of mobile phone connections reached 18.15 crore at the end of November 2021.
To assess the internet service quality in the Rangpur division, the commission collected total 1,829 downloading samples of the four telecom operators.
Besides assessing the internet quality, the commission also assessed voice call quality during its drive.
During the period, the commission collected data of 10,464 sample calls.
As per the data, call quality of three telecom operators — Grameenphone, Banglalink and Teletalk — was up to the regulatory mark.
However, the call quality of Robi was below the regulatory requirement, the BTRC report showed.
Apart from the deviations, all the telecom operators complied with the minimum requirements in call setup success rate, call drop rate and call setup time.
