Bangladesh bank server collapsed for 6 hours

Bangladesh Bank was ultimately able to restore its server six hours after it had gone down.

An executive director of Bangladesh Bank’s Maintenance department verified the incident, however, the official could not explain why it occurred.

Due to the server crash, other commercial banks’ card-based transactions, including a few overseas transactions, have been suspended for six hours.

Earlier, Bangladesh Bank officials told Dhaka Tribune that they couldn’t connect to the central bank’s server on the computer around 1 PM on Wednesday.

They stated that they had received complaints from clients who were unable to withdraw money at ATM booths.

The National Payment Switch Bangladesh (NPSB) system, which was created to ease card-based inter-bank transactions, was closed during this time.

The Bangladesh Bank oversees the NPSB, a domestic ATM-sharing network.

NPSB, on the other hand, settles almost Tk400 crore in transactions per day. As a result, if it goes offline, these transactions are likewise halted.

Because of the server failure, other commercial banks’ card-based transactions, including a few foreign transactions, have been suspended for six hours.

According to certain officials, all local card-based transactions with the central bank have been temporarily halted.

Dhaka Tribune attempted to contact central bank spokesperson Md Mezbaul Haque multiple times but his phone was switched off.

However, requesting anonymity a director of Bangladesh Bank confirmed earlier about the server collapse.

He said: “Yes, our (Bangladesh Bank’s) networking system has been down since lunchtime. As a result, certain transactions may be experiencing difficulties but the IT department officials are working hard to resolve the issue as soon as possible.”

The server was restored at 7 PM.
