Respite for consumers as onion price decreases by half

The prices of onions have seen a significant decline in different regions of the country in the last two days, attributed to a sharp increase in the arrival of this essential cooking item in the market.

Some dishonest traders have built stocks of onions to make extra profit during the month of Ramadan and now the onions are being arrived in the market.

Besides, the farmers have already started harvesting new local varieties of onions for the current season.

Meanwhile, the Indian government’s export agency, National Cooperative Export Limited (NCEL), has started procuring 1650 tonnes of onions from private traders at 29 rupees per kg for export to Bangladesh.

The price of onion has decreased by half within a span of four days due to the three causes, according to the traders.

While talking to the Daily Sun on Monday, farmers in Faridpur, Rajbari, Pabna, Magura, Jhenaidah, Kushtia, and Meherpur said that the harvesting of seasonal onions is going on in full swing in their respective areas.

The price of the onion fell to Tk 1,400 to 1,800 per mound (40 kg) from Tk 2,800 to 3,200 per mound (40) in the last four days at the wholesale market on the grower’s end.

The retail price of onions has also decreased in district-level markets, with onions being sold at Tk 50 per kg, whereas in the capital, it was priced at Tk 60-70 per kg on Monday. This marks a significant decrease compared to Saturday when it was selling at Tk 80-90 per kg in Dhaka.
