Pharma, cold storage soon to be announced free of child labour

The DIFE made the recommendation in a letter sent to the labour and employment secretary

The country’s pharmaceuticals and cold storage sectors will soon be announced as free from child labour, the ninth and tenth industries respectively to be declared so.

The department of inspection for factories and establishments (DIFE) made the recommendation in a letter sent to the labour and employment secretary on February 16, based on the findings of 23 deputy inspector general (DIG) offices of the DIFE.

The findings from 11 DIG offices, which oversee regions where most of the pharmaceutical factories are located, voted to declare the sector child labour-free.

On the other hand, five DIG offices located in cold storage processing areas gave their vote to announce the sector free from child labour, the letter also said.

KM Abdus Salam, labour and employment secretary, acknowledged receiving the DIFE’s letter.

A committee will be formed to cross-check the data and recommendations made by the DIFE, he told Dhaka Tribune yesterday.

Its decision will set the next course of action, which may be the formal announcement of the two sectors being child labour-free, he added.

On February 4, the government had declared six industries — including tannery, glass, ceramic, ship recycling, export-oriented leather and footwear, and sericulture — free from child labour.

Later, the export-oriented apparel and shrimp processing industries were also declared free from child labour.
