Stone, limestone import through Sylhet border resumes today

Suspended since May 01 this year, the import of stones and limestones through Bholaganj LC station from the Indian state of Meghalaya would begin tomorrow (Thursday), official sources informed.

Import through the other stations in the Sylhet region would also resume in a day or two.

Every year, huge limestones and stones are imported through the Bholaganj, Barchhara, Charagaon, Chhatak, and other LC stations in the Sylhet region, having a border with Meghalaya. Meeting the regional demand, the items are transported to other regions. Limestones, stones, and coal are extracted manually and by other means from the various mines in the hilly region.

Amid a deteriorating Covid-19 situation the Indian authority suspended the export through the various borders since May 01.

Revenue Officer in the Bholaganj station Abdur Rouf said, “Measures had already been taken to resume the import after months. In line with government decisions, health-related restrictions would be strictly maintained on the LC station as the Indian truckers with their vehicles enter the Bangladesh territory for dumping goods”.

Importers, as well as locals, expressed satisfaction at the resumption of the stone and limestone import after a long suspension through the LC stations in the Sylhet region. Over 3,000 poor labourers are employed at the station for loading and unloading on the Bangladesh side.
