The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) will hold “Made in Bangladesh” week on November 12-18, 2022 in the capital in order to highlight the contributions of the RMG sector in the economy over the last 40 years before the global arena.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will formally inaugurate the week at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) in the capital.
BGMEA President Faruque Hassan revealed this at a “Meet the Press” held at the conference room of the BGMEA Complex in the capital’s Uttara area today.
“This is for the first time, the BGMEA is holding such week centering the RMG sector. Through this we’ll be able to brand our industry as well as we’ll be able to make a successful recovery from the pandemic. We’ll try to give message to the global forum that we’re working giving priority to sustainable industry,” he said.
The BGMEA President said that labour is not cheap in Bangladesh, rather it is competitive. He said the business facilities like speedy shipment of goods and commodities, setting up of environment-friendly factories are expanding fast in Bangladesh, besides, necessary scanners are being installed at the ports alongside setting up of new warehouses.
“We want to project these things before our foreign friends. Through this, hopefully our image will be further brightened in the global arena,” he added.
Mentioning that the efforts are on to increase the stake of Bangladesh in the global RMG market through diversification of both products and markets, Faruque said that they have exported more than $1 billion in Japan while exports are also increasing in India, South Korea, Australia and Russia.
The BGMEA President informed that they are giving special emphasis on producing non-cotton items.
He also hoped that Bangladesh would be able to grab 10 percent share of the global RMG market by 2025 from the current global market share of 6.8 percent.
Referring to the India’s offer of free transit to Bangladesh for exporting goods to other nations, Faruque said if such facility could be availed, the Bangladeshi RMG owners would be benefitted as because there are many ports in India including in the private sector.
If those could be utilized properly, then the time in imports and exports could be saved.
