Onion price hits new high

Local onion price soars to an all time high of Tk 170 a kg in different retail markets across the city on Wednesday, according to traders and consumers.

Price of the spice, which has been showing an upward trend over the last couple of months, rose to Tk 160 a kg in the wholesale markets.

On the other hand, onion imported from China and Egypt was sold at Tk 135-140 a kg in retail kitchen markets.

Traders at Shyambazar wholesale market told the FE correspondent that they are selling local variety of onion at Tk 160 a kg, while onion imported from Egypt at Tk 130 per kg and from China at Tk 124 per kg.

The wholesalers said they sold local variety of the essential kitchen item at Tk 108- 112 a kg on Monday, and imported ones, especially from Myanmar and China, at Tk 94-102 a kg.

In retail markets, local variety of onion cost Tk 140-150 a kg depending on quality, while imported variety Tk 125-135 a kg on Monday, according to traders and consumers.

A wholesaler at Shyambazar wholesale market preferring anonymity told the FE that onion stock in the market might finish within the next few days.

He, however, said some consignments of onion will arrive in the market soon.

Meanwhile, consumers urged the government to take immediate actions to stabilise onion price.

They suggested the state-run Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) to increase the number of onion-selling trucks at different points across the city.

The TCB has been selling onion at Tk 45 a kg through five trucks in the city.
