Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) today said the prices of the daily commodities, including onion, rice, salt, sugar and oil, will remain under control as the government and business community have taken necessary measures in this regard.
The apex body said this at a press briefing after a meeting with Commerce Ministry, Industries Ministry, Food Ministry and Agriculture Ministry at FBCCI’s conference room in the city.
Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder, National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Md Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, Industries Secretary Md Abdul Halim, Agriculture Secretary Md Nasiruzzaman, Chairman of the Bangladesh Competition Commission Md Mofijul Islam and representatives of the different organizations and business community were present at the meeting.
During the meeting, they discussed about various issues, including the annual production of daily commodities in the country, quantity of import and demand of the country’s people.
Responding to the business community’s willingness to keep the prices of daily commodities under control, the ministers said that strict actions will be taken against those who will increase the prices of daily commodities illegally.
After the meeting, Tipu Munshi said, the government has already taken various measures, including importing onion through cargo planes and ships through big companies, for solving the onion crisis.
He informed that the onion crisis will be solved soon.
Regarding the price of rice, Sadhan Chandra Majumder said people are now eating fine varieties of rice instead of coarse varieties, so the price of fine rice has increased. He, however, said now the price of the rice is under control.
He informed that the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) is taking necessary steps against the price difference between the whole sale market and the retail market.
In his speech, FBCCI President Sheikh Fazle Fahim said, they would be cautious in future for controlling the price of daily commodities.
“We will try to keep the prices of daily commodities within the buying capacity of the people through proper assessment of products, production and import,” he added.
