Israel’s agricultural damages reach $77m in 2019

Israeli agricultural damages totalled 265 million new shekels (about 77 million US dollars) in 2019, according to a government report published Wednesday.

The average annual damage over the last 5 years (2015-2019) has increased by 45.5 per cent compared to 2010-2014, said the report published on Wednesday.

Thus, the yearly average damage to Israeli agriculture in 2015-2019 was 310 million shekels (about 89.8 million dollars), compared to an average of 213 million shekels (61.7 million dollars) in the previous 5 year period.

According to the report, published by the Israel’s Insurance Fund for Natural Risks in Agriculture (Kanat), the global warming is already harming agricultural crops in Israel, and the situation is expected to worsen in the years to come.

The data shows that most of the damage in 2019 was caused by the rainy and stormy winter, reports Xinhua.

Significant damage was also caused by the summer heat, with widespread mortality of young trees and fruit loss, especially in avocado crops.
