GSK’s shares handover pushes DSE turnover to Tk 25 bn mark

Country’s premier bourse, Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) today began week registering daily turnover of Taka 25 billion mark riding on the block market transaction of GlaxoSmithKline shares.

The single-day turnover appeared highest for the first time in nine and a half year following the handover of 9.87 million shares of the British pharmaceutical giant.

Unilever through the acquisition of all shares of entrepreneur director becomes the owner of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Bangladesh.

SETFIRST Ltd, one of the corporate directors of GSK Bangladesh, sold its all 9.87 million shares to Unilever Overseas Holdings B.V in block trade.

At the prevailing market price, the company’s 9.87 million shares are worth Taka 20.57 billion.

DSE’s turnover, a crucial indicator of the market, stood at Taka 25.43 billion from Taka 683 million in the previous session

The biggest single-day transaction was last recorded before December 6, 2010 when the turnover totalled Taka 27.10 billion.

At DSE, the broad index, DSEX settled at 3974.22 points on Sunday, first working day of week, with a gain of 4.94 points or 0.12 percent.

Besides, two selective indices, Blue Chip index, DSE30 and Shariah index, DSES also edged up by 1.41 points and 2.24 points to settle at 1331.73 points and 921.74 points respectively.

On the DSE trading floor, a total number of 18,993 trades were executed in today’s trading session with a trading volume of 61.18 million securities.

Gainers took lead over losers as out of 291 issues traded, 29 securities gained price while 16 declined and 220 remained unchanged.

The market-cap of DSE increased slightly to 3,111 which was Taka 3,108 billion in the previous session.

The top 10 gainers were Paramount Insurance, Islami Bank, One Bank, Islami Finance, ACI Limited, ACI Formulation, Beximco Pharma, Power Grid, BSCCL and Pharma Aid.

Beximco Pharma topped the turnover chart followed by GSK, BSCCL, Indo-Bangla Pharma, Square Pharma, Linde Bangladesh, City Bank, Paramount Insurance, ACI Limited and ACME Laboratory.

The 10 top losers were Exim Bank, Dhaka Dying, BD Wielding, AB Bank, National Life Insurance, Reckitt Benckiser, National Bank, Zeal Bangla Sugar, Sonali Ansh and Phoenix Insurance.

On the other hand, port city bourse, Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also closed trading at green extending the gaining streak of previous session.

CSCX and CASPI went up by 11.81 points and 21.92 points to stand at 6830.07 points and 11284.01 points respectively.

At CSE, a total of 14,962,523 shares and mutual funds of 137 companies were traded, of which 29 issues advanced while 9 declined and 99 issues remained unchanged.
