RMG units to run following BGMEA safety protocols: trade body

The country’s readymade garment factories will run their operations as usual but the units will have to follow the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association’s health safety protocol strictly amid the recent surge in COVID-19 infection cases, BGMEA president Rubana Huq said.

‘Factories will operate as usual observing full safety protocols. This has been communicated to authorities,’ Rubana told New Age on Tuesday.

Against the backdrop of the highest-ever COVID-19 daily infection cases on Monday, the government issued a gazette

notification with 18 directives imposing restrictions on all types of public gathering.

To contain the new wave of the virus, the government also asked all government and non-government offices/institutions, except those provide emergency services, to run with 50 per cent of their manpower.

The BGMEA on Tuesday instructed its members to enforce health safety protocols strictly in all factories.

The BGMEA also asked its members to maintain staggered-time entry and exit mechanism for the workers to avoid crowd at factory gates.

The trade body also provided a 17-page factory opening protocols to the factory owners but did not give any instruction on reducing workforce.
